Caring for the Little Penguins of Low Head
The Friends of Low Head Penguin Colony are continuing their watch over the penguin population at Low Head. 64 nest boxes were put in place in Autumn this year – providing a safe place for place for the penguins to breed and moult.
The first comprehensive survey of the Little Penguin nest boxes was undertaken in early August. Reports of high numbers of Little Penguins ashore elsewhere in Tasmania suggested that there would be some penguins present in the colony. More than 40 nest boxes were checked, and it was very rewarding to see nine nest boxes were hosting penguins on eggs and another five boxes had penguins with chicks. These breeding birds reflect a pulse of winter breeding – something that is becoming more prevalent around Tasmania in recent years.
