“Friends of Sarah Island” is a small group of community-minded locals, who have formed to help with the maintenance of one of Tasmania’s significant heritage sites, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Where we work
Sarah Island sits at the southern end of Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s West Coast. The first Convict Penal Settlement for secondary offenders established in 1822. Sarah Island was officially known as the Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement and operated until 1833. Unlike Port Arthur, there are few obvious ruins but those that remain contribute to the interpretation of a significant part of Australia’s convict history.
What we do
“Friends of Sarah Island” aims to support the local Parks and Wildlife staff to help maintain and care for this interesting and intriguing Island. Maintenance includes rubbish removal, weed control, grass cutting, pathway maintenance and general care of the ruins on a day-to-day basis and through working bees.
